What is Guar Gum?

Guar gum is a natural thickening agent derived from guar beans, an edible legume native to India. Similar to xanthan gum, guar gum is a self hydrating gum that swells in water based solutions, thickening and stabilising creams and lotions. In low concentrations it can be used to increase the stability of emulsions, whilst in higher concentrations it also functions as a standalone thickener to create gel products.

When used in hair care, cationic guar gum can attach itself to the anionic hair shaft, bolstering hair and preventing moisture loss. Guar gum provides a natural protective film on the surface of skin and hair that conditions and smooths, creating products with an excellent skin feel.

Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride (Guar Gum) is a cationic surfactant, it is soluble in cold water and hot water, but insoluble in oil, grease, hydrocarbon, ketone and ester. The aqueous solution is tasteless, odorless, non-toxic and neutral. Because the solution contains a small amount of fiber and cellulose, it is light gray and translucent.
It also exhibits high viscosity in water. The change in viscosity depends on the particle size, pH and temperature. It is compatible with other vegetable gums, starches and water-soluble proteins. Used as thickener, flocculant, flotation agent, film-forming agent and sizing agent, etc.

- Improve the stability of the formula. Because it has the function of suspending and emulsifying, when the content of silicone oil in the formula is high, it can suspend and carry and help stabilize the silicone oil in the shampoo formula.
