Epimedium is a genus of flowering plants in the Berberidaceae family, commonly known as the barberry family. It contains over 60 species, of which up to 15 are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Epimedium grandiflorum is one of the most well-known of these species, with common names that include horny goat weed, bishop’s hat and fairy wings. Horny goat weed, also known as Epimedium, yin yang huo, or herbal “Viagra,” is a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine.
As its name suggests, horny goat weed is purported to improve sexual function by increasing blood flow to the penis. Because it contains phytoestrogens (compounds that act like estrogen), horny goat weed has been studied for osteoporosis (weak and brittle bones), a condition common in people undergoing menopause.
Epimedium Function
Modern research shows that Epimedium contains ingredients such as icariin, volatile oil, wax alcohol, phytosterol, tannin, and vitamin E. It can excite sexual function and promote semen secretion in animals. There are also antihypertensive (causing peripheral vasodilation), hypoglycemic, diuretic, antitussive and expectorant, and vitamin E-like effects. Pharmacological experimental studies have shown that Epimedium can increase blood flow in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular, promote hematopoietic function, immune function and bone metabolism, and has anti-aging and anti-tumor effects. Singaporean medical experts have found that epimedium can effectively kill breast cancer cells, but further research is needed for clinical use.
Signs You May Need Epimedium
Sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction and low desire are the most significant signs that a man may need Epimedium. Post-menopausal women may also benefit from epimedium, especially if they have low bone mass or an unhealthy level of estradiol. Men and women may benefit from epimedium if they have discomfort from chronic joint conditions. Additional signs that you may need epimedium include fatigue, unhealthy blood pressure and breathing difficulties.
