MEET THE HONEYBERRY

HONEYBERRY

ABOUT HONEYBERRIES

Honeyberries originated from Eastern Siberia, which makes them extremely cold hardy (down to zone 2) and tolerant of a wide variety of soil types and pH levels. Known as haskap in Japan and zhimolost (or blue honeysuckle) in Russia, honeyberries are a member of the honeysuckle family, but lack the invasive qualities of their relatives. Flowering in early spring, honeyberries attract many native pollinators to its small, white and yellow, fragrant flowers. The fruits are elongated blueberry-like berries that ripen in early June, with a unique flavor which has been compared to blueberries, raspberries, juneberries, and black currants. They are great for eating fresh or you can use the berries to make jams and jellies. The tender skins of honeyberries are known to “disintegrate” when eaten, making them a wonderful addition to yogurt, ice cream, and smoothies. Try freezing them for a special, melt-in-your-mouth treat to be enjoyed any time of the year.

What does a honeyberry taste like?

Its sour-sweet, delicious taste means that the honeyberry is often eaten fresh or in desserts, ice cream and preserves, and its rich tartness – with a taste that has been described as a cross between a blueberry, blackberry and raspberry – has the potential to be used as a filling for baked goods, or in premium beverage and dairy applications.

Are honeyberries better than blueberries?

Honeyberries have the highest contents of phenolic acids, anthocyanin and antioxidants of the berries we grow. They contain significant sources of potassium, calcium, phosphorous, and iron. They have twice the Vitamin A and four times the Vitamin C as Blueberries.

  • Honeyberry for cancer treatment –

Oxidative DNA damage is said to occur thousands of times per day and in every single cell in the body. It is part of the reason we grow older and plays an important role in the development of cancer cells. Indeed a study conducted, proved that those who consumed haskap on a daily basis reduced their free radical content in the body by 25 percent.

  • Honeyberry for cardiovascular benefits –

This anthocyanin-rich fruit may also help in keeping the veins healthy by nullifying the enzymes that destroy connective tissue, by repairing the damaged proteins in the blood-vessel walls. It helps in promoting healthy circulation of blood through your heart. Thus, the oxidation of LDL is a crucial step in the heart disease process. The antioxidants in haskap berries are strongly linked to reducing the levels of oxidized LDL. Another study has shown that consuming 75 grams of haskap berries with the main meal greatly reduced the oxidation of LDL lipoproteins. It also contains additional chlorogenic acid and phytochemicals that may provide a healthy cardiovascular benefit by controlling blood pressure.

  • Honeyberry is low in calories but high in nutrients –

Furthermore, haskaps are among the most nutrient-dense berries, where a single cup serving contains 4 grams of fiber, 24% vitamin C, 25% Manganese, and 36% vitamin K. Also, it contains about 84% water, and an entire cup contains 85 calories with 15 grams of carbohydrates, making it an excellent source of several important nutrients.

  • Honeyberry is rich in antioxidants –

Also, antioxidants protect our bodies from the damage of free radicals and unstable molecules that can cause cellular damage, fast aging, and life-threatening diseases like cancer. They are believed to be one of the highest carriers of anti-oxidants. They have been responsible for the direct increase of anti-oxidants in our bodies.

  • Honeyberry to lower the blood pressure –

  • Honeyberry can help improve the brain function –

Oxidative stress results in the brain’s aging process and can have a negative effect on brain function. The anti-oxidants present in haskap berries tend to stimulate the areas of the brain that are important for intelligence. Hence, these anti-oxidants directly interact with the aging neurons, which leads to improvement in the cell functioning.

Several studies have shown that honeyberries have anti-diabetic effects. The bioactive compounds in honeyberry cancel out any negative impact on the sugar that leads to maintaining the blood sugar level. The anthocyanins present in honeyberries have beneficial effects on insulin and glucose sensitivity. Consuming honeyberry smoothie can cause major improvements in insulin sensitivity and lowers the blood sugar level.
